Embassies in Canberra

Embassies of the countries

On the 17th of March we went on a mini tour to see some of the embassies. There are nearly eighty embassies in Canberra but we only went to a few of the embassies. My favourite embassies were the ones from China and Japan because they look like traditional buildings from their countries.

What are the embassies?

Countries have embassies in other countries that represent their interests. Embassies also help their citizens who are travelling or need assistance. For example, if you were an Australian citizen  travelling to China and you lost your passport or got arrested, the embassy of your country could help you.

What is the AEC, and What Do They Do?

On the 16th of March, 2015, our class arrived in Canberra. As soon as we arrived, we were off to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). The AEC are responsible for handling federal elections and referendums and maintaining the Commonwealth electoral roll. The Commonwealth electoral roll is a list containing information about each person’s address and name. The AEC also accommodate educational programs and activities, including an interactive learning room and an informational video that projects holograms to make it a lot more enjoyable.

What does the House of Reps and Senate do in Parliament House?

Parliament House is a meeting facility for the Parliament of Australia where the Prime Minister and all the politicians go to discuss laws and pass bills. Located in Canberra the capital of Australia, it’s also a famous landmark and renowned for it’s contemporary architecture. The building was designed by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects and opened on the 9th May 1988 by Elizabeth II, Queen of England.

The Parliament House has two chambers also known as the Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate’s main colour is red, and the House of Reps is green, both colours were based on the British Parliament. The House of Representatives has a number of functions: It decides the government, debates and passes bills, checks government administration and expenditure and provides a forum for public debate on issues of national importance. This is where the Prime Minister sits and debates with the government against the opposition. The Golden Mace is in the House of Representatives; the Mace is carried by the Sergeant-at-Arms where it is placed on the central table. The Senate consists of seventy-six senators, twelve from each state and two from the mainland territories. It shares the power to make laws with the House of Reps and protects the interests of less populous states in the federal parliament, by giving equal representation to all states.DSC04151

Oral Presentation (history)

In week 4, our class presented their oral presentations which they had been working on since week 2 term 2. The first thing we had to do was think of a question about history, then research the question to find the answer and present it to the class in an oral speech. All of the speeches were really good and we learnt lots of interesting facts about history.

Museum and Wetlands Excursion

On Tuesday the 27th of May, our class went to the museum and the Oakland Wetlands.  We first went to the South Australia Museum and looked at the Egyptian exhibit.  After we had learnt about the Egyptians, we had one hour to look around the museum in three groups of ten.  We looked around the museum in our groups and then we all met back at the front entrance.  We were on the bus for around 10 mins and then we arrived at the wetlands.  We had lunch there and we played on the playground for a while and then we went off to find our guide, Mr. Ricketts.  We looked around the wetlands and when it started raining, we went under the shelter and Mr. Ricketts told us lots of information about the wetlands.  After that, we went back on the bus and went back to school.SONY DSCDSC05959
